Bureau of Indian Affairs Corrections Mission Statement

How would the proposed Nisqually Regional Jail facility be a "safe and secure environment" for our community? There are over 100 families within ONE MILE from this proposed jail. There are children who ride their bicycles, take the bus, walk to friends houses in thie neighborhood. WHY WOULD anyone chose to put a Regional Jail at this location?

Look at the underlined word below, "protects" Indian Communities? The Nisqually Indian Tribe has also proposed an elder's housing community kitty corner to this proposed jail.  Thurston County residents and neighborhood children on one side and their proposed elder's housing community on the other, does this make sense?

Here is the Mission Statement for the US Department of the Interior Indian Affairs:

The Bureau of Indian Affairs Division of Corrections protects Indian communities by confining offenders in safe and secure environments in facilities that are humane and cost-efficient.

How can the Nisqually Jail Affect You?

> If you live in the neighborhood,: Safety, traffic, environment,  water, noise, home values … 

The proposed jail is supposed to be “low risk” however, even Attorney McKenna states that “offenders subject to community custody...includes those who are potentially high risk.” Aug. 31, 2011.

 > If you live in Thurston County—Duplicity of services with the A.R.C. Jail built and Vacant in Tumwater $45 Million wasted taxpayers money. Thurston County Commissioners state that there are enough inmates in Washington to ‘fill’ both the Nisqually Jail and the A.R.C. Do we really want to be known as an incarceration state?

> If you live in Thurston County—Liability if inmate escapes, immediately it is the Thurston County’s problem. If an inmate escapes that constitutes a felony. The tribe would not be able to pursue a Felony or off 'reservation' property. Sherriff Snaza states that he does not have enough funds to staff extra law enforcement protection for this area.
>A Congretional Act made the land the propject is proposed on Reservation Land, this land was NEVER The Nisqually Indian Tribe's property prior to this Act. The parcel the proposed jail will be built on is not contiguous to the Nisqually Tribe’s reservation, and is on the South side of  Hwy. 510.  This Congressional Act may set precedence to off-reservation property. See Off Reservation Property Map on blog site or face book page. Even though this is not happening in your neighborhood NOW, it may happen sometime soon!
